When the Wermacular Literature Committee was first set on foot, there was much discussion as to whether the works selected for translation into Bengali should undergo any (tdaytalion, or should be translated its literally as possible and without any paraphrasing or alteration of the original whatever, The following extract from a letter wich | published at that time still expresses my ow: view of the matter. “Mere Translation would not meet the great objects which this Society intends to keep on view. There is not only a difference of latguage between the people of India and of England. We must recognise the far greater diffculty of a difference of ideas, associations and literature. The instruction communicated to the masses requires somewhat more than the nere employment of the vehicle of native language;—the form in which it is conveyed
