তার্থতাতে প্রগল্ভ হইয়া যে উপদ্বীপস্থেরা পারসীয়েরদের সাহায্য করিয়াছিলেন তাঁহারদের উপরে কর বসাইতে নিশ্চয় করিলেন। অতএব মিল্টয়াদিস তাহারদের প্রতিকূলে যুদ্ধ জাহাজসমভিব্যাহারে প্রেরিত হইলেন কিন্তু নাক্সস্ স্থানে অকৃতকার্য্য হইয়া তাঁহার পরাঙ্মুখ হইতে হইল এবং আথেন্সীয়েরা যদ্যপি ইহার পূর্ব্বে তাঁহার দ্বারা নিস্তার পাইয়াছিলেন তথাপি এই ব্যাপারে অকৃতকার্য্য হওনবিষয়ে তাঁহার অর্থ দণ্ড করিলেন অথচ ঐ যুদ্ধ যাত্রা কেবল তাঁহারদের পাগলামিতেই হয়। তিনি ঐ দণ্ডের টাকা দিতে না পারাতে কারাবন্ধ হইয়া সেই স্থানেই মরিলেন। এই কর্ম্ম আথেন্সীয়েরদের কৃতঘনতার অতিস্মরণীয় চিহ্ন।

Miltiades was sent against them with a fleet, but failing at Naxos, he was obliged to return, and the Athenians, who owed their salvation to him, fined him for his failure in an expedition to which their own folly had given birth.
