গ্রথিত হইয়াছিল এবং কখন২ তৎক্রিয়ার বার্ত্তা তাহার উপরি ক্ষোদিত হইত। কখন২ দৃষ্ট হইতেছে যে ঐ অট্টালিকা লুপ্ত হইলেও তদুপরি ক্ষোদিত কথাসকল কালের গ্রাসহইতে রক্ষা পাইয়াছে এবং তদ্দ্বারা পুরাবৃত্ত কতক২ গুরুতর ক্রিয়া যেকালে হয় তাহা অনায়াসে নিরূপণ করা যায়। মুদ্রা অসভ্য জাতীয়েরদের অজ্ঞাত কিন্তু সভ্যতার বৃদ্ধিহওয়াতে তাহার ব্যবহার হয়। ঐ মুদ্রার মধ্যে কতক কোন মহাক্রিয়ার স্মরণার্থ অঙ্কিত হয় তদ্দ্বারা তৎক্রিয়ার কাল আমরা নিরূপণ করিতে ক্ষম হই। অন্যান্য মুদ্রায় মনুষ্যবর্গের মধ্যে কতক মহাকীর্ত্তিশালিব্যক্তিরদের প্রতিমূর্ত্তি ও নাম ও কাল চিহ্নিত ছিল এবং তদ্দ্বারা পুরাবৃত্তের তারিখ নিরূপণ করিতে এবং ভ্রমসকল সংশোধিত করিতে ক্ষম হওয়া যায়। কিন্তু বিদ্যার অনুশীলনহওনানন্তর যে ইতিহাস লিখিত হইয়াছে তাহাই পূর্ব্বকালীন বৃত্তান্তের নিঃসন্দিগ্ধ পথদর্শক।
use in fixing the periods of history. Monuments were erected to commemorate some striking event, the narrative of which was sometimes engraved on them. In many cases while the monuments have perished, the inscriptions have escaped the ravages of time, and thus we are enabled to determine the period in which some of the leading events of history happened. Coins, unknown in a rude age, came into general use with the civilization of mankind. Some were struck to commemorate great events, through which we can fix the date of the event; others contained the figures, the name and the age of the great actors on the stage of life; and from them we are enabled to ascertain the dates and to correct the errors of written history.
