power were confined almost exclusively to the capital, Alexandria, and the provinces enjoyed comparative peace. Rome drawing to itself the wealth of all its conquered provinces, became a paradise of luxury, and Alexandria from the advantages of its natural position became the channel by which that luxury was fed. By these means, as well as by enjoying a freedom of trade with all those ports, which before their submission to Rome, had often been closed by the disputes of contending princes, Alexandria became the naval mistress of the Mediterranean, and was esteemed second in importance only to Rome itself.
