রোম নগর পত্তন হওনঅবধি ২৪৩ বৎসর পরে রাজ প্রভুত্বের নিয়মবৈপরীত্য হয়। ঐ তীবৎ বৎসর ব্যাপিয়া রােম নগর প্রতিবাসি রাজারদের সঙ্গে প্রায় নিয়ত যুদ্ধে প্রবর্ত্ত ছিল এবং যদি ইতিহাসবেত্তারদের কথায় প্রামাণ্য করা যায় তবে ঐ সকল যুদ্ধে প্রায় নিত্যই জয়ী ছিল তথাপি কনসলি পদ নির্ণীত হওন সময়ে রােমানেরদের ভূম্যধিকার শহরের প্রাচীরহইতে অল্প কএক ক্রোশমাত্রব্যাপক ছিল। রোমানেরদের পরাক্রম তাঁহারদের ভূম্যধিকারের অনুরূপ ছিল না কিন্তু নগর বাসি লােকেরদের সংখ্যা ও সাহসেতেই রাজ্য প্রবল এবং প্রত্যেক যুদ্ধেতে নগরের লােক সংখ্যারও বৃদ্ধি হইয়া উঠিল।

Royalty was extinguished in Rome, 243 years after the foundation of the city. Though during this period, Rome had been engaged in almost constant hostility with her neighbours, and, if we are to believe historians, was generally victorious, her territory at the institution of the consulship extended only a few miles beyond the walls of the city; her strength lay not in the breadth and length of her possessions, but in the bravery and number of her citizens, which every war had served to augment.
