Another good book is before us—Chinma Mukul a Novel by the authoress of Dip Nirban add Basanta Utsob, The workmanship throughout is exactly what might be expected irom so able a literary artist. It is a pleasant trensition to nature and fancy—to the calm and placid sweetness of Indian home life from the din and bustle of war, the gorgeous magnificenca and heroic grandeur of the ancient Rajput Princes of Dip Nirban. A deep shade of Tragedy pervades the whole of the book, giving its color to more than one of the principal characters broken in here and there by a faint glimmer of incidental comic seenes which instead of relieving the senses, serves to thicken the gloom around. The dialogues are well sustained. The style is, as is characteristic of thsi writer, chaste, clear, sweet, and vigorous. The book is interspersed with many charming little songs, all of which, it is a pity, are not set to tune. Almost al of the characters are exteemely natural especially Kanak the heroine of the story. She is an admirable portrait of self-sacrifice and disappointed love. Instances of such grand womanheroism and abnegation of self liberate the fancy
