Supposing however that, the calamity in question inas actually befallen the Estate, as 2851.6 of the mrrcars (exclusive of interest) is due on account of the Farm of Bhoorscel. &c., for 1206, the Talookdar who was the Farmer's security, has not the smallest claim to have his lands exempted from sale, on account of dainage sustained in the end of 1207, and the com— mencement of 1208, ospecially as from the small sum offered for the Lands on the 9th instant. it cannot lie expreted that they will produce is sunn more than adequate to the discharge of the arrcars due account the Farm.* ১৮০০ সালে রামকান্ত রায় এবং জগমোহন রায় এই পিতা-পুত্রের বৈষয়িক অবস্থা অত্যন্ত জটিল হইয়া উঠিয়াছিল। মূল চিঠি পাঠ না করিলে এই জটিলতার মধ্যে প্রবেশ করা সহজ নয় মনে করিয়া মূল ইংরেজী চিঠির কতক অংশ উদ্ধৃত করিলাম । ১২০৭ সালের চৈত্র মাসের এবং তৎপরবর্তী বৈশাখ মাসের ঝড়ে যে বোরো ধান নষ্ট হইয়া গিয়াছিল এই কথা কালেক্টর সাহেব অস্বীকার করেন নাই । কিন্তু ভজন্ত বিশেষ কোন অনুগ্রহ প্রকাশ করিবার ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করেন নাই, এবং পরিণামে তাহী করাও হইয়াছিল না। জগমোহনের পিতা রামকান্ত রায়ের ধনী বলিয়া থ্যাতি ছিল । তিনি ইচ্ছা করিলে নিজের এবং পুত্রের দেন। অকাতরে পরিশোধ করিতে পারেন, এই ধারণা কর্তৃপক্ষের মনে বদ্ধমূল হইয়াছিল। স্বতরাং ধত দিন না রামকান্ত রায় উভয়ের দেনা পরিশোধ করেন তত দিন উভয়কে কারাগারে আবদ্ধ রাখাই ছিল সরকারের নীতি । ১৮০১ সালের আগষ্ট মাসে হরিরামপুর তালুক দুই ভাগে বিভাগ করা হইয়াছিল । সোমনগর মৌজা বৰ্দ্ধমান জেলার সামিল, এবং অবশিষ্ট অংশ মেদিনীপুর জেলার সামিল করিয়া দেওয়া হইয়াছিল। ১৮০১ সালের ২৪শে সেপ্টেম্বর সোমনগর মৌজা ১৮৪১/০ মূল্যে নীলাম হইয়াছিল । ইহার এক সপ্তাহ পরে, ১লা অক্টোবর, রামকান্ত রায় তাহার দেনার কতক টাকা কলেক্টরীতে দাখিল করিয়া দিয়াছিলেন । এই টাকার সহিত জামীন জগমোহন রায়ের সোমনগর মৌজার মূল্যের টাকার কতকটা যোগ

t Board of Revenue, O.C., Mis. 21st August, 1801, TNo. 35. balance and not before. প্রবাসী করিয়া লইয়া রামকান্ত রায়ের দেন স্বদ আসল সমেত ৩৩৩৮y৫ ওয়াশীল দেওয়া হইয়াছিল, এবং রামকান্ত রায়কে জেল হইতে মুক্তি দিবার আদেশ দেওয়া হইয়াছিল। এত দিন প্রকৃতপ্রস্তাবে জগমোহন রায় পিতার দেনার জন্ত বৰ্দ্ধমানের দেওয়ানী জেলে আবদ্ধ ছিলেন । কিন্তু পিতার মুক্তর সঙ্গে সঙ্গে জামীন পুত্রের মুক্তি হইল না ; হরিরামপুরের বাকী রাজস্বের জন্য তাহাকে আবদ্ধ রাখা হইল ঃ ১৮০১ সালের শেষ ভাগে জগমোহন রায়কে বৰ্দ্ধমানের দেওয়ানী জেল হইতে মেদিনীপুরের দেওয়ানী জেলে বদল করা হইয়াছিল। জগমোহন রায় সারা ১৮০২ সাল জেলে কাটাইবার পর, যাহারা বাকী রাজস্বের জন্য মেদিনীপুর জেলে আবদ্ধ ছিল তাঙ্গদের সম্বন্ধে রেভিনিউ বোর্ড রিপোর্ট চাহিলে, মেদিনীপুরের কালেক্টর ১৮০৩ সালের জানুয়ারী মাসে র্তাহার সম্বন্ধে এই কৈফিয়ৎ দিলেন— This defaulter is the son of Ramkaunt, Roy who sarined soine very profitable Mchals in Burdwan during the period of the derenniel settlement and is said to bt worth mohr iwo laes of Rupees---I understand that. the Raja of Burdwan has a consitionable claim upon this iman, for which the defaulter, his son, hecame his scrurity, and that he soint time ago obtained a decret: ilgainst them in the Dewanny Atlawlut of Burdwam— It is simpposed that, in order to prevent the sale of the lands held by the defaulter in Chitwa in Ratisfaction of this decree. he purposely fell in arrear last year, that. he is desertiuned to remain in jail until he can bring the Rajah of Burdwan to some sort of adjust ment of his demand against him and his father, and that. as soon :is ho cun effect this, he will pny this Under these circumstancos conclude that the Board will judge it proper that he should remain in jail until he may make good the whole of his balance.* এই কৈফিয়তে উল্লিখিত লাভজনক পরগণা অবশু ভুরসুট ৬ এবং গোপতৃম। পূৰ্ব্বে উল্লিখিত হইয়াছে, এই দুইখানি পরগণ রামকান্ত রায় ১৫৪৯e২৮/৯ জমায় ইজারা লইয়াছিলেন । এই দুইখানি মহালের বাবৎ তাহার নিজের আয়ও বোধ হয় প্রায় ২৫০e e< ছিল । তার উপর তস্থরীদস্তুরী নজর সেলামী ইত্যাদি ছিল । রামকান্ত রায়ের নিকট তুরস্কট নয় বৎসর কাল ( ১১৯৮ হটতে ১২০৬ সন ) ইজার। ছিল, এবং গোপতুম হয়ত আরও অধিককাল ইজারা ছিল ।
