Some people fear that if we, uncivilized people, criticise the proceedings of Government in a candid: spirit, the English ruler may perhaps take us to be rebels. But we see no reason for such an apprehension. If we except the soldier class, there is no probability of any rebellion among the ordinary inhabitants of India. We do not make such a genteel statement. as that would be improper and sinful for the Hindus or Mussalmans of India to rebel against the rulers, who are of another religion, of another nationality, and from another country. We say, that a subject population who are from day to day becoming exhausted and famished, who are without effort, without arms, without any training in war, are not likely to rebel against the English rulers of high prestige, always armed and accourted for battle, of matchless valour, and with an army skilled in the artifices of war. The rebellion of Gangananda, or of Titu Mian was merely the madness of mad men. ...
