The price of Sugar has gone up rapidly during the last few days, Yesterday on the Baltic Exchange the price of oats went up a quarter, and English wheat advanced by four shillings a sack. We are probably on the eve of a rise in the price of bread. The prices of ham, beef, and bacon are rising. Prussia and Belgium have prohibited the export of provisions. These countries, in fact, are probably in for a period of great hardship, from which, of course, the poor and the workers will be the greatest sufferers, War may be glorious but it brings indescribable tragedies in its train. Everyone hopes that this threatened Armageddon may be avoided except, perhaps, some of those people whose business is war.”
