PREFACE, In the following pages an attempt has been made for the first time in the history of our National Literature to present in one volume a systematised series of specimens from the writings of the principal Bengali poets from the earliest times to the present day, Bidyapati and Candi Das to Rangal and Michael The work commences with a brief account of the origin of the Bengali Language and contains, besides a few specimens of the well-known Padas of the Dawn of our Wernacular Literature, extracts from Kirtibás, Kavikankan, Kássídás, Kaviranjan, Bhárat chandra, Madan mohan, Isswar Gupta, Ranga lall, Michael Madhusudan and others, together with biographical and critical notices of the lives and writings of these poets. In making these jelections such passags were chiefly preferred as from their subject ல் style are suited to be read in schools or committed to memory.
