Kw!!ářa Bhatta - fá) Here the term * father" eomprehends also the girl's mother, and the heirs of the father, inasmuch as they also are bound to give hefin marriage, See ante, pp. 649—558. IV. Before her breasts are prominent, a girl should be given in marriage : both he who gives (a damsel in marriage) after (her) menses have appeared, and he who receives (such a damsel,) sink to a region of torment; and the father, paternal grandfather, and great grandfather (of each) are born again in ordure: therefore should a damscl be given (in marriage) before her menses appear. Poithfita«i. 396 But if a bridegroom endued with learning and good qualities be not had, she may he kept unmarried till her death." But it is better that the dansel, though marriageable, should stay at home till her death, than that he should ever give her in marriage to a bridegroom void of excellent qualities (i). Manu, ch. 9. v. 89. - (i) Evan after the appearance of her menses, a girl should stay at her father's honse till her death, yet she should never be given in marriage by her father to a man destitute of . learning and good qualitics. Kullika Bhutta, 397 If the persons competent to dispose of a girl do not give her in marriage at the proper time, she should wait for three years from the time that her menses first appear: after that period, she is at liberty to choose for herself a bridegroom", and by such act neither she nor her husband would cominit an offence. Three years let a damsel wait, though she be marriageable; but, after that time, let her choose for herself a bridegroom of equal rank (u). If, not being given in marriage, she choose her bride groom, neither she nor the youth chosen commits any offence. Manu, eh, 9, vs. 00, 91. (*) After the lapse of three years if she do not get a bridegroom endued with superior qualities, she should for herself choose a bridegroom equal in class and qualities.
