In music, pleasurable quality of sound is the object of deliberate research, but it is by no means evident that this is essential. Some effects of modern music suggest that relations of mere noises, not in themselves agreeable, can arouse aesthetic pleasure and many great composers have worked in sound textures which were generally proclaimed as harsh and disagreeable.
