ਲੰv . 5ਕ | I have nearly finished the translation of Sharmista, If I am to believe all those that have already seen itand among them are the Rajas and Tagore-it will materially add to the little reputation Ratnavali has given me. Every one says it is superior to that book ; as for the Bengali original, the only fault found with it, is that the language is a little too high for such audiences as we may expect now to patronize it. This, I need scarcely tell you, is nothing; for if the book is destined to occupy a permanent place in the literature of the country, it will not be condemned on this head, twenty years hence, for everyone is learning Bengali. To tell you the candid truth, I never thought I was capable of doing so much all at once. This Sharmista has very nearly put me at the head of all Bengali writers. People talk of its poetry with rapture. But you must judge for yourself. Now that I have got the taste of blood, I am at it again. I am now writing another play. Sometime ago, I sent a synopsis of the plot to the Rajas, and they appear to be quite taken up with it. The first Act is finished. J. M. Tagore has written to me to say that it is 'indeed very good.' If I can achieve myself a name by writing Bengali I ought to do it. But I have said enough of self- a d-d unpleasant subject. There is to be no Sudder Examination this year, and I am undecided as to what I should do. My friends think that I should keep quite, till Sharmista is brought out and makes me "Famous." 曾 How do you like Balasore? I would give anything
