The performer played always upon two lutes at the samo time, and placed round his mouth, a species of handage tled behind the head, m order that the checks might not protrude, and for the better management of the breath. The right flute was held by the right, and the left slute by the left hand; the right sluts had only two bores and produced low sounds; the left had several bores, and producel higher sounds. When the musicians performed upon these two oute, of different sounds, it was stud the piece was performed “tibiis imparibus,” or “his dertos et sinistris." Since the invention of the flute, it has undergone a number of changes, both in form and name , some are curved, some are long, others short, small, middle sized, simple, double, right aud left, equal, and unequal. Lastly, these same flutes have been differently named, in various countries ; for example, the curved lute of Phrygia, was the same as the tityrion of Greece and Italy, or the phaution of the Egyptians, called the monaule. Flutes have a compass of nineteen diatonic intervals, viz: from D, first space below the treble clef, to A-sharp ( or B-flat, ) the octave above the first leger line, including every chromatic interval; but, generally, only to the second octave above the second line, treble clef.
