P R E F A C E. Rājā Pratāpāditya lived in the reign of Akbar in the Jessore District and founded a splendid city in a place which is now part of the Sunderbunds. His Biography, one of the few historical ones we have in 'Bengali, was compiled 50 years ago as . text book for the College of Fort William. The present Memoir retains the subject of the former but in a totally different style. The work has been sought after in Germany as throwing some light on the condition of a Hindu prince under the Musal 箕氯褒遗领。 It mentions that the Raja's immediate ancestors lived at Sālqin, then a great emporium of trade, now an obscure village. They went to Gaur, obtained influence there with the king : Raja Pratāpālitya received a grant of land in what is now the Sunderbunds, thea a fertile populous district, but refusing subscquently to pay tribute, the Emperor Akbar sent an army against him ; he was taken prisoner and carried in an iron cage to Benares where he died.
