The difficulty of the times had invested the Minister with very great power, and several-persons of consequence were committed to prison, and among others Dr. Friend, charged on suspicion of high treason. After a confinement of several months, he was admitted to bail. The mode in which his liberation was procured was very remarkable, and does infinite honor to the memory of his friend, Dr. Mead. Being called to attend Sir Robert Walpole, the minister, in sickness, Mead refused to undertake his cure, unless Dr. Friend was first set at liberty. This procured his liberation. At the time of his arrest, Dr. Friend was in the most extensive practice, a large part of which
