( 26 ) vernacular text-books are occasionally used up to the fourth or fifth class of Higher Class English schools, and that any thing more systematic in this direction is scarcely practicable so long as the Entrance standard and scheme of examination remain what they are. To The Members of the Committee appointed by the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad to deliberation on certain motions with reference to the Calcutta University Examinations, Dated, Hooghly, the 4th February 1895. GENTLEMEN, In acknowledging the receipt of your letter dated the 5th January 1895, beg with reference to the two motions brought forward at the 4th ordinary monthly meeting of the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad held on the 24th August 1894, to state as follows :- 2. With regard to the first Motion viz. that it is desirable that in the Entrance Examination of the Calcutta University, candidates be examined in Mathematics and certain subjects of information such as History and Geography, in their own vernacular, it may be at the outset be observed that the proposal admits of consideration from different points of view. First of all, if the proposal be adopted by the Calcutta University, it is likely that better books than those we have at present in the subjects named, will be written in the several vernaculars, and thus gradually these languages will be enriched. Secondly, the generality of our students will attain a greater proficiency in their own vernacular; and in the third place boys will more easily and quickly learn certain subjects, such as History, Physical Geography and Elementary Science. But on the other hand, whatever facility they now acquire in writing and talking English, will unquestionably to a certain extent at least, be diminished. In reading history from English books, our students in addition to the information they get regarding historical facts, make a certain amount of progress in their knowledge of English, as such books afford them copious reading in that language.
