( поо ) From Dr. SURY KUMAR SARBADHICARY, To BABU RABINDRA NA'TH TAGORE, DR., GURUDASS BANNERJI D. L, MR. NANDA KRISHNA BOSE C. S. PANDIT RAJANIKANT GUPTA, BABU HIRENDRA NATH IDUTT, DEAR SIRS, I am in receipt of your letter dated the 5th instant and in reply beg to inform you that I do not at all approve of the proposal to make the vernacular languages the medium of instruction up to the Entrance Examina tion of the Calcutta University in the subjects of History, Geography and Mathematics, but would restrict the proposal up to the standard of the Middle English Examination i. e., to the 4th class of Entrance Schools. I would however suggest the addition of an essay in the vernacular language to be written by a candidate who goes up for the Entrance Examination. 2. I approve of the proposal to make the study of vernacular languages a part of the curriculum in the F. A., and B. A., Examinations not in substitu tion of Sanskrit, Arabic, but in addition to these languages. It is at all times necessary for us to bear in mind that English is a foreign language difficult for us to master and our students should be always kept in constant familiarity with that language whether in the study of Literature, History, Geography and Mathematics then and then only shall they be able to cope with the difficulties of that language and master the same and hold their position in the competative Examination both here and elsewhere. I have the honor to be, SRs, Your most obedient servant, SooU CooMAR SURBADHCAURY,
