সিরাজদ্দৌলা
উড়াইয়া দিল! ইতিহাসে ইহারই নাম চন্দননগরের অলৌকিক মহাযুদ্ধ![১]
এই অলৌকিক মহাযুদ্ধের গুপ্ত-রহস্য কিন্তু ইংরাজের ইতিহাসে স্থানলাভ করে নাই। ইংরাজের গতিরোধ করিবার জন্য ফরাসি-সেনা গোপনে ভাগীরথীগর্ভে কতকগুলি জাহাজ জলমগ্ন করিয়া রাখিয়াছিল;— কেবল স্বপক্ষের জাহাজ চলাচলের জন্য একটি অতি সঙ্কীর্ণ পয়ঃপ্রণালী বর্তমান ছিল। কিন্তু দুর্গবাসী ফরাসিসেনা ভিন্ন আর কেহ তাহার সন্ধান জানিত না। ফরাসি দুর্গাধিপতি মসিয় রেলের কঠোর শাসনে অসন্তুষ্ট হইয়া টেরানু নামক একজন ফরাসি সৈনিক ইংরাজদিগের নিকট এই গুপ্ত সন্ধান বিক্রয় করিয়া চন্দননগর ধ্বংস করিবার সহায়তা করে![২] এইরূপ সহায়তা পাইলে ইংরাজেরা যে সহজে চন্দননগরের নিকটবর্তী হইতে সক্ষম হইতেন, তাহার প্রধান প্রমাণ লর্ড ক্লাইব;—তিনি নিজেই বলিয়া গিয়াছেন যে, কেবল জলযুদ্ধেই এত সহজে চন্দননগর ইংরাজের হস্তগত হইয়াছিল।[৩]
