The lecturer held that Hindooism was “superior” because it owed, it: ፲}:ኒ፣nይ Iየ፡ }}Q ከኽዃክ ; a'kuowledged no mediator between God and man; because the Hindoo worships God at all times, in business and pleasure, and every thing; because , while other Scriptures inculcate the practice of piety and virtue for the sake of eternal happiness, the Hindo) Scriptures alone in intain that God should be worshipped for the sake of God alone, and virtue practised for the sake of virtue alone; because Hindooism inculcates universal benevolence, while other faiths merely refer to man; because Hindooism is non-sectario, (believing that all faiths are good), non-proselytizing, pre-eminently tolerant, devotional to an entire abstraction of the mind from time and sense, and the concentration of it on the Divine; of an autiquity running back to the infancy of the human race, and from that time till upw influencing ia alt particulars, the greatest affairs of the state and the most minute assairs of domestic life. The lecture was replied to on another evening by the printipal of the Free Church Coliege, in the College Hall, and he was met there by several disputants on the previous lecturel's ground by whom his views were roundly questioned. This of itself will show how uecessary it is to have an able and thoroughly educated class of men as missionaries in India.
