At one time Krisna was enjoying the company of Rādhā accompanied by her maids, when Abhimanyu, the husband'of Rādhā, was informed of her conduct by her mother-in-law—Jatilă and sister-in-law—Kutilä. The infuriated husband accompanied by his mother, sister and some neighbours went to the groves of Vrindă with a drawn sword to punish the wife. Rādhā came to know of the danger that was imminent, and prayed Krisna for devising some means to escape it. All on a sudden Krisna assumed the form of the goddess Kāli and Rādhā fell at her feet in the attitude of worship. This story sets at rest the old quarrel between the Sāktas and the Vaisnavas proving the identity of Krisna and Kāli. When Abhimanyu saw that his wife was worshipping Kāli, he was highly pleased as he was himself a devout worshipper of Kãli.
