{{gap}}১৪ই জুন টানার দুর্গদ্বারে ইংরাজ বাঙ্গালীর শক্তিপরীক্ষা আরম্ভ হইল। দুই সহস্ৰ সিপাহী-সেনা মুহুর্মুহু কামান-ধ্বনিতে দিঙ্মণ্ডল মেঘাচ্ছন্ন করিয়া দৃঢ়পদে দুর্গদ্বারে সমবেত হইবামাত্র, ইংরাজ বীরপুরুষেরা পৃষ্ঠপ্রদর্শন করিতে কিছুমাত্র লজ্জাবোধ করিলেন না! কিন্তু পৃষ্ঠপ্রদর্শন করিয়াও অনেকে নিস্তার পাইলেন না; সিপাহীরা জাহাজের উপর মুষলধারায় গুলি বর্ষণ করিয়া ইংরাজ- সেনাদলকে ব্যতিব্যস্ত করিয়া তুলিল। তাঁহারা গোলা বারুদের যথেষ্ট অপব্যয় করিয়াও সিপাহীদিগকে দুর্গ হইতে তাড়িত করিতে সক্ষম হইলেন না! কলিকাতা হইতে কতকগুলি নূতন বীরপুরুষ, আসিয়া ছত্রভঙ্গ ইংরাজ-সেনাকে উৎসাহিত করিয়া, বীরকীর্ত্তি সংস্থাপনের জন্য প্রাণপণে চেষ্টা করিয়া দেখিলেন; যখন তাহাতেও সিপাহী-সেনা হটিল না, তখন ইংরাজেরা নিতান্ত ভগ্নমনোরথে, নোঙ্গর তুলিয়া, জাহাজ খুলিয়া, ধীরে ধীরে কলিকাতাভিমুখে প্রত্যাগমন কৱিতে বাধ্য হইলেন।<ref>Whilst the Nabob was advancing, it was determined to take possession of tho Fort of Tannah, which lay about
