উপসংহার।
The story of the rise and progress of the British power in India possesses peculiar fascination to all classes of readers. It is a romance sparkling with incidents of the most varied character. Whilst it lays bare the defects in the character of the native races, which made their subjugation possible, it indicates the trusting and faithful nature, the impressionable character, the passionate appreciation of great qualities, which formed alike the strength and weakness of those races,—their strength after they had been conquered, their weakness during the struggle. It was those qualities which set repeatedly whole divisions of the race in opposition to other divisions—the conquered and the willing co-operators to the sections still remaining to be subdued. *** In the combination of astuteness with simplicity, of fearlessness of death and conspicuous personal daring with inferiority on the field of battle, in the gentleness, the submission, the devotion to their leader which characterised so many of the children of the soil, (the student) will not fail to recognise a character which demands the affection, even the esteem, of the European race which, chiefly by means of the defects and virtues I have alluded to, now exercises overlordship in Hindustan.—Col. কেবল ঘটনাবিবৃতির জন্য যে সকল ইতিহাস সঙ্কলিত হইয়াছে, তাহাতে দেখিতে পাওয়া যায় যে, সিরাজদ্দৌলার অন্যায় উৎপীড়নেই তাঁহার অধঃপতন সংঘটিত হইয়াছিল। কার্য্য সমালোচনা করিয়া নিরপেক্ষভাবে ইতিহাস সঙ্কলন করিলে, তাহাতে সকলকেই লিখিতে হইবে,—এই হতভাগ্য নর পতির অযথা কলঙ্কিত তরুণজীবনের অত্যাচার অবিচার উপলক্ষমাত্র; আমাদের চরিত্রহীনতাই মোগল-সাম্রাজ্যের অধঃপতনের মূল কারণ।
আরঙ্গজীবের শেষদশায় ভারতবর্ষে যে অরাজকতার সুত্রপাত হইয়াছিল; তাহাতে মোগলের রাজসিংহাসন টলিয়া উঠিয়াছিল; অন্তর্বিপ্লবের ছিদ্রলাভ করিয়া ফরাসী এবং ইংরাজ, এই দুই পরাক্রান্ত বিদেশীয় বণিকসমিতি দেশীয় লোকের সহায়তায় ভারতবর্ষে আত্মশক্তি সুদৃঢ় করিবার জন্য লালায়িত হইয়া উঠিয়াছিলেন। সিরাজদ্দৌলা তাহার গতিরোধ করিবার চেষ্টা করিয়া অকালে দেহবিসর্জ্জন করিয়াছিলেন; কিন্তু তিনি নিশ্চেষ্ট হইয়া বসিয়া থাকিলেও মোগলের সিংহাসন অটল রহিত না!
