From the fall of Carthage to the birth of Christ.

The preceding period was the age of Roman glory; her citizens exhibited many noble examples of temperance, justice, courage and patriotism, for which we vainly look in the period now under review, which may justly be termed the age of Roman degeneracy. The plunder of the fairest portion of the world introduced boundless luxury, and a complete relaxation of morals. Every man who was sent to govern a province, returned with a fortune. Though this corruption had gradually been gaining ground in the republic since the conquest of Macedon, it was in some measure checked by the fear of Carthage; but no sooner was this rival city levelled with the ground, than the Romans, as the historian relates, ran precipitately into shameless dishonesty, perfidiousness and cruelty. “I mean,” adds he, “their senate, their generals, and their ambassadors.”

The same year in which Carthage was destroyed, B. C. 145, the Romans on the occasion of a dispute between the Achæans and Lacedemonians, subverted the Achæan league, burnt Corinth, Colchis, and Thebes, and reduced Greece to the abject condition of a Roman province. In Spain the Romans had to maintain a war for more than sixty years, before the country was entirely subdued. Of all the nations subjugated by Rome, the Spaniards defended their liberty with the greatest obstinacy. The war with this people began in the year B. C. 200, and continued almost without interruption to the year B. C. 133. In the year B. C. 146 the intolerable oppressions of the Roman governors drove to desperation the Lusitanians (the Portuguese), and they chose Viriathus, a private soldier, for their general. He is described as free from vice, and possessed in the highest degree of the virtues attributed to the best of the Romans. For six years he maintained the struggle, with a boldness and preseverance almost miraculous, and repeatedly defeated the Roman armies which were sent against him. Having at length driven the Roman consul to great straits, he seized the opportunity of offering him peace, which was soon after concluded with the full consent of the senate. But they were no sooner delivered from the terror of his arms than they determined to violate the peace, even without warning; and Scipio the consul having come unawares on Viriathus and defeated him, basely bribed three of his friends to murder him, to the eternal reproach of the Roman name. After his death, the Spaniards still protracted the war for six years, and again defeated the Roman troops; but at length nothing remained to them in Spain, but the city of Numantia, which contained 4000 defenders, and which the Roman consul invested with 60,000 troops. He was however unable to take it, till the besieged, after having been reduced to the last extremity of famine, had set fire to their houses, and perished in the flames, leaving to the Romans nothing of Numantia but the name. The town fell B. C. 133; and Spain was formed into two Roman provinces. Two years after, Attalus, the worthless king of Pergamus, to whose father the Romans had given a large portion of Asia Minor, dying, bequeathed his dominions to Rome. Thus by one stroke of the pen did the Romans become masters of one of the richest kingdoms in Asia; but the increase of luxury and perfidy which this gift brought on Rome, made her pay dearly for the prize.

This bequest was made in the year B. C. 130. One hundred and thirty-two years before this time, the Romans were not in possession of a single foot of land beyond the confines of Italy; but at this period, their empire comprised Spain divided into two provinces, the territory of Carthage in Africa, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Liguria, and Cisalpine Gaul in the west; and in the east, Macedonia, Achæa, and Asia Minor. The inhabitants of these countries were entirely subject to Rome, and were governed by Roman officers who had already passed the offices of consul and prætor, and in whom were united both the civil and the military power, a measure which led to the most frightful oppression. Roman troops were kept up in the provinces, and the Latin language was introduced every where, except where the Greek language was already in use.

The baneful consequences of this scheme of boundless conquest, and of the acquisition of so many rich provinces, soon became apparent. The struggles which had disturbed the city in the early days of the republic were renewed. The state had successively acquired immense lands which the rich divided among themselves, excluding the poorer classes from all share in them. These were left without resource; for they could not, as in other countries, resort to trades, because they were reckoned too infamous to be performed by any but slaves. It was during the siege of Numantia, B. C. 133, that the first violent commotion was excited in Rome by the oppression of the rich, in which for the first time the blood of citizens was shed in civil broils; arms and violence were then introduced into the public assemblies, and other tragedies rapidly followed which led eventually to the entire ruin of Roman liberty.

Tiberius Gracchus, whose family was originally plebeian, but whose father had married the patrician daughter of the first Scipio, the conqueror of Carthage, was a man of the highest benevolence and courage. Being desirous of relieving the misery which pressed on the lower orders, he could discover no plan more effectual than to revive the Licinian law. This law, which forbad any Roman citizen to possess more than 500 acres of land, had gradually fallen into disuse, and many of the great men of Rome possessed extensive domains. Gracchus thus became the man of the people, and the object of the senate's most sincere abhorrence. Having been elected one of the tribunes of the people, he proposed the Licinian law for restricting the quantity of land to 500 acres; which, notwithstanding the opposition of his colleague, was passed, and a body of commissioners was appointed to divide the lands. About this time the king of Pergamus having, as we have mentioned, bequeathed his wealth to the Romans, Tiberius Gracchus proposed that it should be divided among the poorer classes, a project which served still more to enflame the hatred of the rich. When his year of office expired, he stood again for the tribuneship, but on the day of the election, Scipio Nasica, a patrician who possessed much of the public lands, taking with him a multitude of his clients and slaves armed with clubs, and accompanied by a large body of the senate, fell upon Tiberius, and put him and three hundred of his friends to death. All the public disputes since the birth of the republic, during six hundred and twenty years, had been terminated by mutual concessions, the people respecting the senate, and the senate fearing the people; but on this occasion the senate itself took the fatal resolution of having recourse to murder to compass their ends; and all moderation between the different parties in Rome, from this time, entirely ceased.

Ten years after the tragical death of Tiberius Gracchus, his younger brother Caius, a man possessed of still greater elevation of mind and talent, resolving to tread in his brother's footsteps, entered upon the thorny path of Roman politics. Having been chosen tribune of the people, he pushed the execution of the Licinian law with such vigour, as to lead the great and rich to combine for his destruction. His active mind was ever devising schemes of large and permanent utility; but there were two measures which peculiarly distinguished his period of office. He took away from the senate the power of judging, which they had enjoyed from the beginning, and bestowed it on the knights, an inferior order in the state, intending thereby to counterbalance the great authority of the senate. He also proposed to bestow the freedom of the city on the Italian allies, a project on which we shall have occasion to dwell more particularly hereafter. These measures shewed the danger to which the aristocracy were exposed by his plans; and they openly attacked him in the city itself, and put him and three thousand of his adherents to death. After his removal, the senate contrived to evade the Agrarian law, so that it was never effectually brought into practice. The hope held out to the Italian allies of participating in the government of Rome and of the world, was by his death disappointed, which sowed the seeds of discontent in their minds, and afterwards produced the most bitter fruits.

The victory which the senate had gained over the people, by the murder of the two Gracchi, enabled them to carry forward their schemes of aggrandizement and extortion with impunity. Unbounded luxury now succeeded to the ancient simplicity of manners, and corruption of the grossest character was practised without a blush. The governors of provinces plundered the people with impunity, while the various kings in alliance with Rome, endeavoured to maintain a party in the senate by large bribes, which gave a fresh impulse to the cupidity and the intrigues of this once august body.

The corruption which had infected the ruling men in Rome, was more particularly developed in the war in which about this time the state was involved with Jugurtha, and which commenced in the year B. C. 118. Massinissa, as a reward for the services he had rendered the Romans in the Carthaginian war, had received the kingdom of Numidia in Africa. He was succeeded by his son Micipsa, who had two sons, Hiempsal and Adherbal, and a nephew Jugurtha, a man, active, able, and unprincipled. Fearing lest Jugurtha should supplant his sons, he sent him with his contingent of troops to assist the Romans at the siege of Numantia. There Jugurtha perfected himself in the art of war, and gained the applause of his commanders. Many in the Roman camp moreover inflamed his ambition, by telling him that, on the death of his uncle, he might make himself master of Numidia without any fear of the Romans, for at Rome all things were venal. Jugurtha on his return was adopted by the old king his uncle, and left joint heir with his sons. But no sooner was Micipsa dead, than Jugurtha murdered Hiempsal, and driving Adherbal out of the country, became master of Numidia. Adherbal repaired to Rome to complain to the senators, and Jugurtha sent his envoys with a rich purse to bribe them. His gold prevailed, and ten commissioners were sent to Africa to divide the country equally between the two claimants. Jugurtha bribed the ten ameens to allot him the finest provinces, and finding now that gold was all powerful, audaciously made incursions even upon his cousin's share of the country, who was obliged to shut himself up in Citra. Jugurtha having laid close siege to it, Adherbal contrived to send messengers to Rome to inform the senate of his danger. It was proposed at first to send an army to Africa, to bring Jugurtha to condign punishment; but those who had touched his gold defeated this proposal, and three commissioners were deputed to decide the difference between the two kings, at the head of whom was Scaurus, the prince of the senate. Landing in Africa, they summoned Jugurtha to their tribunal. But though he appeared in person with a few troops, his generals continued to push the siege of Citra with vigour, and the commissioners, through weakness or corruption, after hearing his reply to their charge, returned to Italy without having accomplished any thing. Soon after their departure, Citra fell, and Jugurtha put Adherbal to death by torture, and massacred all whom he found in arms. The news of this event so inflamed the people of Rome, that the senate, conscious of guilt and dreading their resentment, ordered an army in good earnest to Africa; but Jugurtha contrived to bribe the generals, and induce them, without striking a blow, to agree to a disgraceful treaty. When these transactions became known in Rome, the indignation of the people knew no bounds; and Memmius, one of their tribunes, openly charged the generals and ambassadors with corruption, and prevailed on the senate to send an envoy to Africa to bring Jugurtha to Rome on the public faith, that he might be confronted with the men he had bribed. Jugurtha accordingly came to Rome, not with the pomp of a monarch, but in the garb of a suppliant, and immediately set in motion his old practices of bribery so effectually, that on being summoned to an assembly of the people, where all his foul deeds were recounted, and he was called on to reply to the charges, Bœbius one of the tribunes, who had largely tasted of the king's gold, forbad him to answer them. Jugurtha would probably have escaped with impunity, if he had not ruined his cause by causing Massiva, one of the grandsons of Massinissa, and a claimant for the throne, to be assassinated in the city of Rome. This filled up the measure of his iniquities; he was commanded to quit Rome and Italy instantly, and an army was sent to deprive him of his dominions in Africa. The Roman consul Albinus, to whom the charge of the war was committed, did nothing; which led many to conjecture that he also had been corrupted by Jugurtha. One of the tribunes meanwhile proposed, that those who had received bribes from the king should be brought to trial; and as the people, from their hatred of the nobles, became incredibly zealous on this occasion, the senate was obliged to yield to the popular voice, and four men of the highest dignity in the state were condemned. Metellus, a man of incorruptible integrity, was at the same time appointed general in Africa. He conducted the war with great vigour, took town after town, and chased Jugurtha through his own states. He was on the point of putting an end to the war, when he was supplanted in his command by Caius Marius.

Caius Marius, born of poor and ignoble parents at Arpinum, had raised himself by his own daring spirit and his great talents, to various dignities in the army and the state. While tribune of the people, he espoused the popular cause, and curbed the nobility so vigorously, as to gain the affections of the lower classes, and to be reckoned the champion on whom they depended for the protection of their rights. At this time he was serving in Africa as the lieutenant of Metellus. He solicited permission to repair to Rome and stand for the consulship, and on his arrival in the city, was raised to that dignity by the favour of the people, which greatly mortified the aristocracy, since no man of such ignoble lineage had ever been elevated to that dignity before. To Marius, then forty-eight years old, notwithstanding the opposition of the senate, was the conduct of the Jugurthine war committed, and Metellus was obliged to make over the army to him. Marius, whose talents as a commander were of the first order, drove Jugurtha to great extremities, but being unable to obtain possession of his person, prevailed on Bocchus, king of Mauritania, his own father-in-law, to betray him to the Romans. Even Bocchus, though an African, and reckoned a barbarian by the Romans, hesitated to lend himself to such an act of treachery; but the arguments of Sylla, the lieutenant of Marius, at length prevailed over his scruples. Bocchus invited Jugurtha to a friendly conference, and delivered him up to the Romans; and thus ended the Jugurthine war B. C. 106, to the great dishonour both of Marius and Sylla, and of the Roman character.

The next event of importance in the History of Rome is the irruption of the northern nations of Europe, by whom in the lapse of time the whole Roman empire was subverted. The Cimbri, the Teutones, and others, descending from the north of Europe, had about the year B. C. 109, laid waste the newly acquired province of Transalpine Gaul. Four years after, they defeated the Roman general Silanus, and soon after Scaurus and Cæpio, and Italy trembled as in the days of Hannibal. The eyes of all were now fixed upon Marius, who was considered the only general capable of saving the state. So deep indeed was at this time the terror of the Romans, that they suspended the law which forbad any man to be elected consul in his absence, or till ten years had elapsed since his previous consulship. Marius was elected to this office while absent from Italy, and though he had been consul only three years before. He proceeded with a well disciplined army in the year B. C. 103, to Gaul, where he learnt on his arrival, that the barbarians after ravaging the whole country from the Rhone to the Pyrenees, had marched southward into Spain. Marius awaiting their return, passed the time in perfecting the military discipline of his troops, and while thus engaged was elected a third and fourth time to the consulship. In the third year, the barbarians returned from Spain, and dividing their forces into two bodies, the one, consisting of the Ambrones and the Teutones, determined to enter Italy through Provence; the other, composed of the Cimbri, to fetch a wide circuit and enter it by the Tyrol. These latter marched to their destination, while Marius continued to watch the movements of the Ambrones. At length, he fell upon them near the modern city of Aix, and completely defeated them, when more than 100,000 of their troops were killed or taken prisoners. The Cimbri soon after descended the Alps; but the Roman troops under Catullus, who had been sent to oppose them, seized with a panic took to flight. Marius, who had in the mean time returned to Rome, was entreated to take the command of the army. Marching northward he came up with the barbarians on the banks of the Po; a great battle ensued; the Cimbri were totally routed; 140,000 lay dead on the field, and Italy was delivered from its terrors.

About the same time occurred the war of the slaves in Sicily. Treated with severity by their masters, and longing for liberty, they successively took up arms, chose leaders, and defeated the Roman armies; and it was not till a million of these unfortunate beings had been exterminated that peace was restored to the island.

The seven years which elapsed between the years B. C. 98 and 91, produced no memorable event, except the banishment of Metellus, the chief of the aristocratic party. Marius, having obtained his sixth consulate by money, leagued himself with several men of desperate characters, who tyrannized over the city to such a degree as to rouse the resistance of all the well disposed citizens, and to constrain Marius to abandon them. The chiefs, Saturnius and Glaucias being besieged in the capitol, were obliged to surrender, and were executed. The violence of these men prepared the way for the extraordinary violence of Marius and his opponent Sylla, which we shall soon have occasion to narrate.

Before we enter on the bloody scenes, which deluged Rome in the time of Marius and Sylla with blood, it appears proper to remark, that Rome originally formed from a band of robbers, continued for many centuries in a very barbarous state, without even the first rudiments of polite literature. But when she began to extend her conquests beyond Italy, and came in contact with the more civilized states of the East, the higher classes of Roman citizens began to imbibe a taste for letters. The Greek language was studied with care; and the Latin tongue received such a polish and refinement that at length it almost equalled the Greek in purity and strength. Rome after subduing Greece by force of arms, was thus in its turn subdued by the literature, philosophy, and refinement of the Greeks. The vastness which the affairs of the republic had attained, served also to foster the talents of the most eminent citizens; while the rich rewards which attended their success in eloquence stimulated exertion, and gave a high tone to the upper ranks of society.

It was during this period, that the power of the knights was contracted. By the laws of Caius Gracchus the judicial power had been transferred to them; being already farmers of the revenue they were now enabled to carry on their extortions without hindrance, for the appeal from their misconduct lay to their own tribunals. From this union of the office of Collector and Judge in the same persons, the various provinces of the empire were reduced to the most deplorable condition. The insolence of this large body of men, (equal in number to 3900,) increasing with their power, became at length insupportable; and Drusus, one of the tribunes of the people, succeeded in depriving them of half their authority: but he was murdered in the streets of Rome.

Another plan proposed at this time by Drusus, was that of giving all the allies of Rome in Italy the freedom of the city, which would have brought them directly into the management of the government. This project which was equally disliked by the senate and the people, was for the present frustrated. The Italians, who had formed great hopes of success from the promises of Drusus, being thus bitterly disappointed, began to contrive how they could acquire these rights by force of arms. While in this state of excitement, they heard of the murder of Drusus, which confirmed their persuasion that those rights could be obtained only by their own prowess. In all the wars in which the Romans had been engaged for the conquest of the world, the Italian allies had formed two-thirds of their armies; they served in separate cohorts, and were never admitted into the Roman legions. The disappointed states were those which lay to the south of Cisalpine Gaul, except the Latins, Sabines, Hetrurians, and Umbrians, who continued faithful to Rome. Before these confederates proceeded to open war, they sent a deputation to Rome to represent that they had served the republic in all her wars, had furnished annually a double proportion of troops, and begged that they might be admitted as citizens of the city, which they had contributed to raise to its present grandeur. The senate indignantly rejected the proposal, and both parties prepared for war. The Italians chose Corfinium, about sixty miles east of Rome for their metropolis, hoping to make it the capital of Italy; and they organized a senate of 500 members, and chose consuls, generals and other officers after the model of Rome. The war lasted about three years, from the year B. C. 90 to 88. The Romans were repeatedly defeated by the Italians, but were in the end victorious, chiefly through the able conduct of Sylla, who had served under Marius in the war against Jugurtha. After various alternations of defeat and success, the senate conceded to the Italian states one by one the rights of citizenship; which if granted at the beginning, might have saved the lives of 300,000 men, who perished in these wars. The concession thus made to the Italians, completely destroyed the balance of the Roman constitution, and irretrievably compromised the tranquillity of the city. For any demagogue was thus enabled to inundate the city with a large body of country voters, and to carry by violence any measure he might propose.

The next war in which the Romans were engaged was that against Mithridates. He was descended from a line of kings who had long governed the kingdom of Pontus, lying in the north eastern corner of Asia Minor. He possessed a great and comprehensive genius, and eminent talents for war, but his good qualities were obscured by perfidy. He had already extended his conquests over a large portion of the north of Europe and Asia, and aspired to nothing less than the entire subjugation of all Asia. By interfering in the affairs of Cappadocia, which bordered upon the Roman provinces in Asia Minor, he first came in contact with the Romans, who were very soon convinced that his ambitious projects required to be vigorously checked. The progress of the long war they waged against him, which, beginning in the year B. C. 89, ended only with his death, B.C. 63, confirmed this opinion; for the Romans had encountered no enemy more formidable, since the days of Hannibal. When he had made himself master of Bythinia and Cappadocia, the two dethroned kings of those countries repaired with their complaints to Rome. The senate sent commissioners to Asia with orders to reinstate them, to which Mithridates offered no opposition, as his plans were not yet ripe. But soon after he sent his son into Cappadocia and seized the kingdom, declaring that this step was forced upon him by the iniquity of the commissioners. Without waiting for orders from the senate, those commissioners raised an immense army, and proceeded at once to open hostilities with Mithridates. He however completely overthrew their armies, and rapidly expelled the Romans from all the provinces, towns, and islands of Asia Minor, Rhodes excepted. This happened in the year B. C. 87.

When the news of these disasters reached Rome, the senate determined to send a large army against this new and formidable foe, and to prosecute the war with vigour. Two men then appeared foremost among the candidates for the management of the war, Marius and Sylla. Marius, the champion of the people, the conqueror of the Cimbri, though then nearly seventy years old, was still tormented with the thirst of glory, and longed to embark in a war which promised to gratify both his ambition and his avarice. Sylla, the champion of the senate and the aristocracy, who had covered himself with renown in the recent war of the Italian allies, was equally anxious to obtain an appointment, which was likely to realize his highest wishes; and to his share it fell either by lot or appointment. Marius put every ignoble art in practice, and leagued himself with the most flagitious characters in the city, to get the command transferred to himself. Proceeding to the senate, he seized several of its members and put them to death; and Sylla himself, who was then present in the assembly, was obliged to escape to his army, which was then besieging Nola. Overawed by the violence of Marius, the senate transferred the command of the Mithridatic war to him. Armed with this power, Marius became master of the city, put to death many of Sylla's friends, and confiscated their effects. Sylla, on the receipt of this intelligence, marched towards Rome with thirty-five thousand men; and this was the first instance in which a Roman army had ever appeared against the city. Sylla easily made himself master of it, caused some laws to be passed for curtailing the power of the people, put several of Marius's adherents to death, and banishing Marius himself, set a price on his head. After he had thus established the superiority of his own faction in the city, he appointed Cinna and Octavius consuls, for all freedom of election was henceforth at an end, and set out with his army for the East, to conduct the war against Mithridates.

Marius, escaping from Rome, fled to the south of Italy, where, being hotly pursued by his enemies, he concealed himself in a marsh. He was soon discovered, drawn out all covered with filth, and thrown into a dungeon; but he contrived to make his escape, and repaired to Africa; where the prætor, who was in Sylla’s interest, ordered him instantly to quit the province. Marius bid the messenger say in reply, that he had seen Marius, an exile from his country, sitting amidst the ruins of Carthage; meaning thereby to give an instructive lesson upon the uncertainty of worldly possessions to the prætor, from the sad condition of Carthage once the rival of Rome, and his own case, reduced from a state of the highest importance to one of abject destitution. From thence he set sail, and traversed the seas during the greater part of the winter. Meanwhile, Cinna, who had been left consul in Rome, a man as able as he was profligate, attached himself more closely to the party of Marius, but was obliged to fly from the city after a bloody engagement. Having collected an army, and being joined by the rest of his party, as well as by Marius himself, he proceeded towards Rome, to which he laid close siege. The city, though defended by Octavius the consul, and by Metellus, who has been already mentioned in the Jugurthine war, was reduced to such straits, that the senate was obliged to capitulate. One condition only was exacted, that no citizen should be put to death; and the promise was readily given, but shamefully violated. Marius refused to enter the city, till the people had reversed the decree of his banishment; but while the officers were counting the votes, he, unable to restrain his own passions, rushed in with 4000 slaves, and began the slaughter of his enemies. He then calmly sat down to glut his revenge, and ordered all those whom he suspected of hostility to be massacred; among whom were included some of the most illustrious men of the city. While pursuing this career of cruelty, he was carried off by a fever, in the year B. C. 87, in the seventy-first year of his age.

We now turn to the acts of Sylla. It has been already remarked, that Mithridates had in one campaign made himself master of all the Roman conquests in Asia, excepting Rhodes, to which he laid siege. Immediately after, he ordered all the Romans then residing in Asia Minor to be butchered; and eighty thousand were put to death in one day; their property was confiscated, and every deed and document found in their possession, burnt. The execution of this order shews very plainly, that the extortions of the Romans had roused the hatred of their Asiatic subjects. The destruction of all the records on this occasion, produced the greatest confusion in Rome. Sylla, however, was now on his march to revenge this perfidy. Mithridates after having overrun Asia, sent his armies into Greece, under Archelaus, his ablest general; and the Athenians, who had been condemned to a fine by the Romans, willingly embraced his party, which was also joined by several other states. Sylla landed in Greece in the year B. C. 87, and opened the war by besieging Athens, which obstinately resisted all his efforts for two years, but was at length taken, and Sylla ordered an indiscriminate massacre of all its inhabitants. Such carnage had never been seen in Greece; the blood spilt in the streets flowed out at the gates. But when the first fury of his troops was slaked, Sylla, at the earnest request of his friends, spared those who had survived. Archelaus, the general of Mithridates, on the fall of Athens, proceeded to Cheronea in Bœotia, where Sylla gave him battle, and, notwithstanding the disparity of forces, completely defeated him; only 10,000 men of the enemy escaping from the field. Dorylaus, another general of the king of Pontus, soon after entered Greece from the north with a fresh army, which was however entirely routed at Orchomenos. Mithridates on hearing of this double defeat, directed Archelaus to conclude a treaty with Sylla, on any terms. Sylla himself was not indisposed to peace, as one of the generals of Marius's faction had been sent from Rome, with an army, to supersede him. Mithridates was also anxious for peace, because Fimbria, the general alluded to, on his arrival in Asia, had defeated one of the king's sons, and besieged the king himself in Pitanes. Fimbria, after this success, proceeded to ravage the country about Troy, which induced Sylla to hasten into Asia. As soon as he had crossed the Hellespont, he was met by Mithridates, who concluded a peace on the terms dictated by Sylla himself; which were, that he should restore Asia Minor and Paphlagonia to the Romans, and give up Bythinia and Cappadocia to their respective monarchs; pay 2000 talents, about forty lacs of Rupees, and deliver up seventy ships of war. The treaty being concluded, Sylla marched against Fimbria, who, seeing his soldiers desert him in great numbers, fell upon his own sword, and perished. Sylla, having now no enemy to combat in Asia, gave up the country to be pillaged by his soldiers, who enriched themselves beyond all former example. He also fined the inhabitants of the whole province (those excepted who had remained firm in the Roman interest,) and thus amassed the incredible sum of a 20,000 talents, nearly four crores of Rupees; with which he prepared, in the year B. C. 84, to return to Italy, to revenge his personal wrongs.

Rome, and in fact all Italy, was at this time in possession of the party of Marius. On the news of Sylla's approach, with a victorious army, a large fleet and an immense treasure, the consuls began to levy troops, and fit out ships for the impending war. The army they assembled on this occasion in various parts of Italy, amounted to nearly 2,00,000 men; and various bloody engagements were fought during two years, in this great civil war, in all of which Sylla was victorious. Italy was deluged with blood, shed not by a foreign foe, but by the hands of her own inhabitants. Sylla having at length obtained possession of the city, prepared to punish his enemies; and Rome, the mistress of the world, became the prey of one of her own citizens. He assembled the senate, and while yet addressing that body, caused eight thousand of his prisoners to be murdered. Their cries terrified the senators; but Sylla without any change of countenance, bid them mind what he was saying to them, as it was only the cries of a few a seditious men whom he had ordered to be punished. After this he filled Rome with slaughter, sparing none who were suspected of having belonged to the party of Marius; while his friends, with his connivance, also despatched their private enemies. Wealth became a crime; and none escaped whom it suited the interest of Sylla’s partizans to remove. When his own friend Metellus asked him in the senate, when there would be an end of these calamities, Sylla merely replied that he was not yet certain whom he should leave alive. The day after this conversation, he fixed up in a public place a list of those whom he had doomed to death, for whose heads an immense reward was offered; slaves were permitted to kill their masters, and sons encouraged to murder their fathers. The estates of the condemned were confiscated, and went to enrich the followers of the tyrant. Day after day, new names were added to the fatal list, till at length it amounted to four thousand seven hundred. The number of those slain however so greatly exceeded those who were proscribed, that one Roman historian declares, that more perished by the hands of Sylla than by the bloody edict of Mithridates, which we have noticed above. And this statement may be readily credited; for his emissaries spread themselves over Italy, and every where hunted to death every man who was suspected of having aided any of the party of Marius. More however were murdered for their wealth than for their party, nor did Sylla stop the proscription till he had enriched all his followers. Five towns in Italy were levelled with the ground; all the inhabitants were massacred, and their estates sold.

After these proscriptions Sylla caused himself to be appointed perpetual dictator, and procured a law which gave him an uncontrolled power over the lives and fortunes of all his fellow-citizens. Thus fell the liberties of Rome; for though on the death of Sylla, there remained the semblance of freedom in the election of the chief magistrates, yet the public assemblies were substantially under the control of one or two powerful citizens. Sylla enjoyed the dictatorship two years, and during this time completely changed the form of the constitution. In all his laws, it was his aim to deprive the people of their privileges, and to enlarge the prerogative of the senate. This body, which had been greatly diminished in number by his murders, as well as by those of Marius, he filled up from the order of knights. He took from the tribunes of the people the power of legislation and reduced their dignity to a mere name by ordering that no man who had been a tribune should be eligible to any superior office. He deprived the knights of the judicial power, which he again vested in the senate. By these and other regulations he restored the senate to its pristine power, though the august character of that body it was not a in his power to revive. At the same time, he provided for one hundred thousand of his own soldiers out of the estates of the cities and individuals which he had confiscated, and these men, owing their fortunes as they did to him, constituted his most powerful support.

Sylla having thus reached the summit of his wishes, while in the enjoyment of uncontrolled authority throughout the Roman world, suddenly laid down his power and offices, and retired into private life at Cumæ; and, strange to say, no one relative of the thousands whom he had massacred, thought of taking away his life, after he had voluntarily reduced himself to a defenceless state. In his retreat at a Cumæ, he wrote his own memoirs, and gave himself up to debauchery; a loathsome disease seized him, and worms preyed on his body even before life was extinct. On his death-bed he composed his own epitaph, importing, that no man had ever outdone him either in obliging his friends or punishing his enemies, a most correct delineation of his character. This war between Marius and Sylla, caused the death of 200 senators, of whom 33 had been consuls, and of 1,50,000 citizens. The death of Sylla is placed in the year B.C. 77.

As it now appeared evident that Rome could bear a master, the consul Lepidus, on hearing of Sylla's decease, aspired to the supreme power. His attempt however proved abortive; his colleague in the consulship after twice defeating him, constrained him to fly to Sardinia, where he died. These various feuds called into action the talents of many aspiring Roman generals, more especially of Pompey and Cæsar; the equilibrium of the Roman constitution was gone; yet, though it did not appear possible that the Roman world could remain much longer without an absolute master, forty-seven years elapsed between the abdication of Sylla and the elevation of Augustus Cæsar to the imperial dignity, which extinguished the last sparks of Roman freedom.

The first war of importance in which the Romans were engaged after the death of Sylla, was that waged against Sertorius in Spain, who was the ablest general of the party of Marius. Disgusted with the mismanagement of his colleagues in the war with Sylla, he retired to Spain, B. C. 82, where he maintained himself in a state of independence for ten years. The whole history of Rome presents to view no character more estimable or brilliant than that of Sertorius. On crossing the Pyrenees and entering Spain, he began to assemble an army, and was invited by the Lusitanians (the Portugueze) then at war with Rome, to take the command of their forces; an invitation which he joyfully accepted. He soon gained the entire confidence, not only of the Lusitanians, but of the rest of the Spaniards, who hailed him as a second Hannibal. Perfect master of the art of war, with a small band of only 8000 men, he maintained his ground against four Roman generals, whose combined forces numbered not fewer than 1,20,000 troops. He formed the senators and principal Romans with him into a senate, maintaining that this was the real Roman senate, while the body in Rome which bore that name, was but the tool of Sylla’s faction. He endeavoured to establish schools throughout the country for the education of the higher ranks, and left no means untried to improve the people. But as he refused to acknowledge the authority of Rome, then under the dominion of his enemies, it became necessary to subdue him. After all the generals of the republic who had been sent against him, had been repulsed with disgrace, Pompey, the darling of the people, a commander of deserved celebrity, was sent to conquer him, but Sertorius baffled all his efforts and repeatedly defeated his armies. At length after a noble struggle of ten years, he was assassinated by his own general Perpenna, who was prompted to this perfidy partly by jealousy, and partly by the hope of the reward which Lucullus, the colleague of Pompey, had offered to any who would murder him.

In the same year in which Sertorius was cut off, the war of the gladiators broke out in Italy. These men consisted of prisoners taken in war, who after being reduced to slavery, were trained to butcher each other in shews to furnish amusement to the Romans. Before the chance of war had reduced them to bondage, they were free and noble as the Romans themselves. A body of them at Capua disdaining their abject condition, rose upon their keepers, and determined to struggle for their freedom under the auspices of Spartacus, one of their own unhappy number. This man was another Sertorius, prudent, moderate, of great skill in war; in short a hero in the garb of a slave. The numbers of the gladiators so greatly increased, that for three years they were enabled to withstand all the efforts of Rome. Spartacus after defeating four Roman armies, found himself at the head of 40,000 troops. Being convinced however that the gladiators must eventually fall under the colossal power of Rome, he persuaded them to march through the entire length of Italy, recross the Alps which were unguarded, and regain their native seats, where they might hope for freedom and peace. But the prospect of plundering Italy, and more especially of sacking Rome, dazzled their eyes, and led them to neglect this prudent advice. Crassus the Roman general was sent against them with a powerful army; the gladiators were defeated, and 40,000 of their troops being left dead upon the field, the revolt was extinguished. Spartacus after performing prodigies of valour, fell, covered with wounds, B. C. 70.

Full trial had now been made for some time of that law of Sylla which restored the judicial power to the senate, and it was found only to have increased the evils complained of. The public administration of the empire was at this period insufferably corrupt. The great made no other use of their appointment to the government of provinces, than to fleece the people, and enrich themselves with the view of purchasing fresh offices in Rome. The unhappy victims of their oppression experienced no relief from appealing to Rome, where they found that their oppressors were the very individuals who were to take cognizance of their complaints. To such a pitch of corruption had morals risen that no one could be found bold enough to impeach a great or a rich man. Although therefore the transfer of the judicial power to the knights, who were also collectors of the revenue, had been found highly pernicious, the restoration of that power to the venal senate, which comprised in its body the highest criminals, men who had returned to Rome laden with the plunder of kingdoms, was discovered to be infinitely worse. A wise law was therefore carried by Pompey, which divided the judicial power among the three orders of senators, knights and tribunes.

We now come to the celebrated war against the pirates. They were originally of Cilicia, a maritime province of Asia Minor, lying on the northern shore of the Mediterranean. The troubles of Asia Minor, and the oppressions of the Roman governors drove them to piracy. Those who fell into their hands were taken to the isle of Delos, and sold to the agents of rich Italian citizens to be employed as cultivators; this island became therefore a great slave mart. Their ravages were at first confined to the coasts of Asia Minor, but as public attention was absorbed in civil broils, they were emboldened to extend their ravages, till at length they ventured to fit out large ships of war, and to surprize and plunder cities which they found without defence. As the Roman commanders hitherto sent against them had been defeated, they formed a kind of government in Cilicia, a coast difficult of approach by reason of rocks, and formed magazines along the coast for the deposit of their booty and arsenals for refitting their ships. Their power had now increased to such a degree, that they possessed a thousand well manned ships, the commanders of which indulged in every species of luxury. They had taken four hundred towns, and plundered thirteen of the richest temples in the world. But of all the mischiefs inflicted by them, none was felt more severely at Rome than the scarcity of provisions. Rome was almost entirely dependent upon the foreign supplies of corn brought by sea from abroad; these supplies were intercepted, and the mistress of the world was reduced to the brink of starvation by a host of pirates. The most prompt and vigorous measures were therefore necessary to suppress this confederacy. In these circumstances, Gabinius, a creature of Pompey, in the year B. C. 66, proposed to the people, to invest him with absolute power for the extirpation of these marauders. The senators and chief men, remembering the evils inflicted on Italy by Sylla after he had acquired absolute power, strenuously opposed the proposal; but their opposition was overruled by the people, with whom Pompey was a great favourite. They decreed him an army of 1,25,000 men and a fleet of 500 ships, and gave him permission to take from the treasury more than 6000 talents, more than a crore of Rupees, for the expedition. Pompey applied himself to the war with such vigour and ability, that within forty days of his leaving the shores of Italy, the entire body of pirates was suppressed throughout the Roman states. The speedy and glorious termination of this enterprise, by relieving the citizens of Rome from the pressure of famine, greatly increased his influence, and opened a way to the attainment of his great object, the conduct of the war against Mithridates, who, after the defeat of Sertorius, Spartacus, and the pirates, was the only enemy remaining to be conquered.

We must now go back for a few years to trace the progress of events in Asia since the treaty concluded between Sylla and Mithridates in the year B.C. 85. Unhappily this treaty had not been reduced to writing, which afforded Murena, the Roman general who succeeded Sylla, a pretext for attacking Mithridates a year or two after. Upon the complaints of the king, he was however obliged to desist by the express orders of Sylla, then all powerful in the city of Rome. This is usually termed the second Mithridatic war. In the year B. C. 75, Nicomedes, king of Bythinia, a country bordering on the one hand on the dominions of the republic, on the other, on the territories of Mithridates, dying, bequeathed his kingdom to the Romans. Mithridates who had long coveted the possession of this region, refused to acquiesce in its being annexed to Rome, and preparing a large fleet and army, attacked it both by land and by sea; thus arose the third Mithridatic war which raged for ten years. Lucullus, one of the consuls of the year, a good general, but extravagant in his expenses to the highest degree, contrived by means not very honourable, to obtain the conduct of this war, which promised to yield a rich harvest of gain. Though his army was greatly outnumbered by that of Mithridates, he was for a long time uniformly victorious. Mithridates had laid siege to Cyzicum, one of the most important places in Asia. Lucullus obliged him to raise the siege, with the loss of nearly 3,00,000 men. Soon after he defeated the king's fleet, and obliged him to evacuate Bythinia. Pursuing his victorious career, he chased Mithridates through his hereditary dominions, and, notwithstanding a large army which the king had drawn from the wilds of Tartary, constrained him to take refuge at the Court of his son-in-law Tigranes, king of Armenia, B. C. 71.

Tigranes, without possessing one spark of talent, was at this time the most powerful monarch in Asia. On his succeeding by inheritance to the throne of Armenia, a country of very limited extent, he conceived the idea of aggrandizing his kingdom. He had already subdued Mesopotamia, brought Arabia under obedience to his will, and extended his protection to the Syrians. These conquests were owing not so much to the vigour of his arms, as to the cowardice of those whom he subdued; the reader may therefore form some idea of the degree of weakness which then pervaded these countries, when he finds that they yielded even to Tigranes. Inflated with unbounded pride by these victories, he assumed the title of King of kings. When therefore the Roman general sent imperiously to demand that Mithridates should be delivered up, Tigranes, unaccustomed for twenty-five years to such freedom, was not a little disconcerted at the message, but putting on an appearance of calmness, he replied that he would never abandon his father-in-law, and immediately commenced his preparations for war. The Roman and Armenian armies met at Tigranocerta, the new capital which Tigranes had founded, and which he had spared no pains to enlarge and adorn. The army of Lucullus amounted only to 13,000 men; that of the enemy to 2,60,000. Lucullus was censured for his rashness in risking an engagement against such fearful odds; but he was not ignorant of the weakness and cowardice of his foe, and fully confident in the energy of his own veterans. Victory declared for the Romans; 1,00,000, of the enemy's foot, and all their cavalry perished. The defeat of the Armenians was achieved with so much ease, that the Roman soldiers were almost ashamed of having drawn their swords against such contemptible foes. The next year, B. C. 68 Lucullus gained another victory over Tigranes at Artaxata, which completed the humiliation of this vain-glorious monarch.

The tide of victory, however, soon after turned against the Romans. Lucullus, hitherto so fortunate in all his expeditions experienced a sad reverse though never overcome in the field. His troops became discontented, and mutinied repeatedly. Mithridates, ever active and vigilant, seized this favourable opportunity, and recovered almost all the territories of which Lucullus had despoiled him, without the Roman general's being able to take one efficient step to arrest his progress. Meanwhile the party adverse to Lucullus at Rome, gained strength, and procured a decree of the people for transferring the conduct of the war to Pompey, who entered upon the command of the army, B. C. 67. The year after, he defeated Mithridates by night on the banks of the Euphrates, and obliged him to fly with only 800 men. In this extremity he again sought the aid of Tigranes, but that base monarch, through fear of the Romans, not only refused him shelter, but set a price on his head. The king of Pontus thus deserted in his utmost need, though then above seventy years of age, still undaunted in spirit, determined to collect the wild highlanders from the Taurus to the Alps, and like a second Hannibal, burst upon the plains of Italy, and carry destruction to the gates of Rome. But the desertion of his son Phraates disarranged all his plans and reduced him to despair. In this state of mind, rather than fall into the hands of the Romans, he swallowed a dose of poison, which he always carried about with him, and died, B. C. 63. Such was the miserable end of Mithridates, the most formidable foe the Romans had encountered for nearly a hundred and fifty years. He was a very extraordinary man, both for greatness of spirit and endowments of mind, which is sufficiently attested by the fact that of twenty-two nations over whom he ruled in his days of his prosperity, he was said to be able to address each one in his own tongue; but all his glory was tarnished by his cruelty.

Pompey having thus subdued Mithridates, applied himself to settle the affairs of the East. Armenia Major was left to Tigranes; Cappadocia was allotted to Ariobarzanes; the Bosphorus to Pharnaces; Judea was subjugated and given to Hyrcanus; while Syria and Phenicia were formed into a province of the Roman empire; Pontus and Paphlagonia into another; and Cilicia and Pamphylia into a third. Who can restrain his astonishment at the amazing power which the republic had now attained? Seven hundred years before this period, Romulus, collecting a few banditti, erected some rude huts on the banks of the Tibur, and called his village Rome. That village had now grown into a mighty city, and swayed the destinies of mankind, and one of its generals, in this single year, disposed of kingdoms far exceeding in magnitude the whole extent of Italy.

After Pompey had completed these arrangements, he prepared to return to Italy. The senate had not forgotten how Sylla returning victorious at the close of the first Mithridatic war, had landed with his troops in Italy, and inflicted the deepest misery on Rome; they were not therefore without apprehension lest Pompey, now placed in similar circumstances, should follow the same course. But he quieted all their fears by disbanding his army on his landing. He was honoured with a splendid triumph, and brought into the treasury the sum of not less than 20,000 talents, or four crores of Rupees.

While Pompey was thus engaged in the East, the conspiracy of Cataline broke out at Rome. He was a man of noble birth, but of ruined fortunes, and of a most profligate disposition, who, with the successful example of Sylla before him, conceived the idea of making himself master of Rome by violence. Cicero, the most eloquent man in Rome, and consul for the year, discovered the designs of Cataline and his associates, on which they became desperate, and planned to murder him and to set fire to the city. Through the skilful contrivance of Cicero, Cataline was induced to quit the city and join a body of troops which he had assembled in the neighbourhood. His accomplices were taken in the city and executed, and he himself fell in an engagement with the troops sent against him.

At this period, B. C. 63, though the old forms of the Roman constitution were preserved, its spirit had departed, and all power in Rome, and hence throughout the world, was shared among a few of its leading men. Of these the most prominent at this time were five; Pompey, usually called the child of fortune, who by his constant victories, and by courting the people, had attained the first importance in the republic; Cæsar, a man of illustrious birth, the first military commander of the age, distinguished for his splendid talents and the vast compass of his genius; whose boundless ambition, “led him often to repeat that he would rather be the first man in a village, than the last man in Rome;” Crassus, who though distinguished by his success in several campaigns, was still more remarkable as the most wealthy and avaricious man of that period, and “who only considered those as rich who could maintain an army by their own private means.” Cato, who naturally stern, wished, but in vain, to bring back Rome to its former condition, in which the people and the senate, and not the will of one or two powerful men governed the state; and lastly, Cicero, the most accomplished orator and wisest statesman in that age of great men, but totally destitute of all nerve of character. These were the five individuals upon whom the eyes of all men in the Roman world were fixed, and upon whose conduct the destinies of the empire were suspended.

Cæsar, who possessed the greatest talents of the five, had been appointed to the government of Lusitania where he retrieved his ruined fortunes; for on quitting Rome, he was so deeply involved in debt as to say, that he wanted twenty lacs of Rupees to be worth nothing. On his return to Rome he obtained the consulship, and began to lay the foundation of his own power, by forming a secret league with Pompey and Crassus for the mutual support of each other's interest; this is called the first triumvirate. When matters had been thus settled between them, Cæsar was appointed for five years to the government of Gaul, which included the modern Switzerland and France, the greater part of which was then unconquered. But before he set out for his province, he and his associates leaguing with Clodius, a man of great interest in the state, but of abandoned habits, procured the removal of Cato and Cicero from the city. Cato was despatched to Cyprus to take possession of the island, and Cicero was sent into banishment. But the violence of Clodius, who filled the city with tumult, constrained Pompey to sanction the return of Cicero after he had been a year in exile. He returned to Rome, B.C. 57.

Cæsar prosecuted the war in Gaul, more than eight years, from the year B. C. 58 to 50, and did not return to Rome till he had entirely subdued that country. His campaigns have been rendered doubly interesting by the narrative which he has left us of them in his own simple and nervous style. His first engagement was with the Helvetii, the natives of modern Switzerland, whom he completely subdued; after this he continued to push his conquests through Gaul till he reached the shores of the western ocean, which no Roman general had previously visited. In the year 57 he gained a decisive victory over the Belgæ, the next year over the Aquitani, and in the succeeding year, B. C. 55, hearing that there was an island a few miles distant, he passed over to it. He found the natives living in a savage state, without the use of the plough or the knowledge of letters, but extremely bold. This island was Britain, of the existence of which the Romans had no idea before Cæsar's expedition. He simply made an irruption into it the first year; in the next, namely, in the year 54 B. C. he landed in it again with a larger force, and pushed on as far as London, but returned to Gaul, without leaving any troops to preserve the footing he had gained. In the years 54 and 53 he carried his victorious arms into Germany, which country he would probably have subdued, had not the Gauls so repeatedly revolted; and hence there remained no trace of Cæsar's expedition into Germany beyond the terror which his arms had inspired. The reader will perceive that it was Cæsar, who first carried the Roman arms into those countries which are now the chief seats of civilization, and the centre of that power which regulates the rest of the world. How are times altered! In the days of Cæsar, Italy enjoyed the highest degree of culture and civilization, and governed mankind without a rival. Gaul, Germany and Britain, were in a state of barbarism, ignorant of all arts, and destitute of literature. But in the lapse of eighteen centuries, these countries have emerged from that savage state, have given to Europe the supremacy over the other quarters of the globe, and carried arts and sciences to a degree of perfection as far exceeding the highest attainments of the Romans in Cæsar's day, as those Romans then surpassed the wild tribes of Britain and Gaul; while Rome is fallen from its high estate, and Italy is barely reckoned among the powers of secondary importance in Europe.

While Cæsar was thus engaged in Gaul he did not however neglect to keep up his interest in the city of Rome, by means of his partizans; and that interest was in no small degree strengthened by the splendour of his conquests, which completely dazzled the eyes of the citizens. Hence a degree of jealousy arose between Crassus, Pompey and him, which was however smothered for a time though not extinguished, by a meeting held at Lucca in Italy, to which place Cæsar had repaired to meet his two associates. New arrangements were there made. Cæsar was allowed to retain his government in Gaul, for a second period of five years. Pompey and Crassus were to secure the consulship for themselves; the former to have for his province, Spain and Africa; the latter, Syria, or, more properly speaking, Asia, with the view of marching against the Parthians, among whom he hoped to acquire a large accession to his wealth. Pompey and Crassus did not obtain the consulship without great opposition from Cato, who was anxious to prevent the monopoly of power in the hands of one or two overgrown citizens. Crassus soon after proceeded on his expedition against the Parthians, solely at his private expense; but after crossing the Euphrates, he was completely defeated at Carrhæ by Surena, the Parthian commander, who cut off his head, and filled it with molten lead by way of reproaching his great avarice, B. C. 53.

Pompey, who remained at Rome, governed his province through his various lieutenants. The death of Crassus removed one rival out of his way, and brought him one step nearer to the object of his ambition, which was, to be the acknowledged head of the senate and the republic. With this view he endeavoured to secure his being appointed sole consul, in which, after violent disputes of eight months' continuance, he at length succeeded. These strides to supreme power hastened his rupture with Cæsar. Pompey could not endure a rival, nor Cæsar a superior; it was not to be supposed therefore that Cæsar, the conqueror of Gaul, with a veteran army at his devotion, would allow Pompey to become the first man in the Roman world without a struggle. From this time a war between them appeared inevitable. As Pompey had on his side the greater part of the senate, and almost all the great men of Rome, he felt over-confident of success, and neglected to take those precautionary measures, which, considering that Cæsar was to be his antagonist, ought to have been his first care. Cæsar had asked permission to stand for the consulship while he was absent from Rome, which, though contrary to law, would have been granted, had not a determination existed in the senate to crush him. Instead of complying with his wishes, they ordered him to disband his troops and return to Rome as a private citizen. This would have placed him at the mercy of Pompey, and he therefore refused to comply, unless Pompey would also agree to disband his army. Repeated attempts were made to bring about an accommodation, with little sincerity and no success. Cæsar meanwhile drew his troops to Arminium, on the boundary line of Italy proper, which no Roman general could pass at the head of his army without permission from the senate. Instigated by Pompey, the senate at length passed a decree, that if Cæsar did not disband his army within a given period, he should be considered a public enemy. This put an end to all hopes of accommodation. Cæsar, on receiving the decree, crossed the little stream termed the Rubicon, and the civil war commenced.

When the news of Cæsar's approach with his army reached Rome, Pompey and the greater part of the senate, retired southward in such haste that they left all the public money behind them in the treasury, which subsequently falling into the hands of Cæsar, proved of the most essential service to him. Pompey had boasted that he had only to stamp with his foot, and an army would spring up in Italy for his defence; so far however was this from being the case, that Cæsar, in the short space of sixty days, made himself master of Italy, while Pompey with Cato and

Cicero in his train, was obliged to retreat from post to post, and at length to embark for Greece. Cæsar being fully aware that the real strength of Pompey lay in his armies then quartered in Spain, deemed the conquest of those troops a matter of more pressing importance than the pursuit of Pompey. He passed over into Spain, therefore, without delay, and, notwithstanding the natural difficulties of the country, obliged Pompey's lieutenants to give up their armies without so much as fighting a battle. From thence he passed with incredible speed through Gaul, crossed the Alps, traversed the whole length of Italy and having reached the port of Brundusium, embarked for Greece, where Pompey had assembled a large army from all the countries of the East. Though Pompey's troops far exceeded in number those of his antagonist, his councils were distracted, and Pompey himself, in this important crisis, appears to have lost that vigour of mind and action which had carried him triumphantly through so many events. Cæsar's army though small in comparison, was composed of better materials, and he himself was the soul of it. After various military manoeuvres, both armies came to a battle at Pharsalia, in the plains of Thessaly, July 20, B. C. 48. Pompey was completely defeated, and constrained to fly. With only one or two attendants, he determined to land in Egypt, where he hoped for an asylum, as he had, in the days of his prosperity, rendered great services to the royal family; but he was basely murdered by the orders of the minister, who hoped thus to gain favour with the conqueror. Pompey's body was cast out naked on the strand, where it was indebted to an old Roman soldier for the rites of sepulture. Cæsar followed him with his usual speed, but arrived in Egypt three days after the murder. When the head of his great rival was brought to him, the generous victor burst into tears. The battle of Pharsalia, though it did not extinguish the party of Pompey, decided the fate of the Roman republic, which never after recovered its freedom.

Cæsar continued six months in Egypt, partly attracted by the charms of the beautiful Cleopatra, and partly detained on account of a war in which he was engaged with her brother, who was soon after killed in battle, after which Cæsar bestowed the whole kingdom on Cleopatra. From Egypt he marched into Asia Minor, against a son of Mithridates who had revolted, but was now defeated and slain. The victory was achieved with so little trouble, that Cæsar when sending an account of the campaign to the senate, employed only three words, veni, vidi, vici, I came, I saw, I conquered. He now returned to Rome; but as the remaining chiefs of Pompey's party were assembling all their forces in Africa, he was obliged to march against them. His usual success attended him in this expedition; Cato who commanded the troops, despairing of his cause, put himself to death at Utica; and Scipio, Juba, and Petreius followed his example. Cæsar returning victorious to Rome, was allowed to enjoy but a brief repose of four months. The two sons of Pompey had collected in Spain the scattered troops of their discomfited party, and began to appear formidable. Cæsar, therefore, proceeded thither without loss of time, and a bloody but decisive battle was fought at Munda, in which one of the brothers was killed, and the army totally routed. The conqueror returned for the last time to Rome, in the year B. C. 45, absolute master of the Roman world, and was created dictator for life. All the real power of the state was concentrated in him, and had he possessed the same disposition as Sylla, he had now an opportunity of revenging himself on his enemies; but Cæsar was by nature mild and clement, and so far from persecuting any of his adversaries, manifested on every occasion in life, the utmost greatness of soul. The power he had acquired, he employed in healing the wounds which this long civil war had inflicted on Italy. His active mind led him also to project the largest schemes of public utility, of which however he lived only to accomplish one, the reformation of the calender. In the state to which Rome was now reduced, in the wreck of all her republican institutions, without any vestige of that virtue which alone could maintain the ancient spirit of the constitution, the government of a single man with the endowments of Cæsar, was the greatest of all blessings. But he had not resided at Rome a single twelvemonth before a conspiracy was formed against him by men who owed their lives to his clemency, and their fortunes to his favour; and Caesar fell under their daggers in the senate house, B. C. 44. Among the chiefs of this confederacy, were Brutus and Cassius; men whose patriotic motives we cannot but respect, while we are constrained to lament that catastrophe which removed from the world the only man capable of governing it.

On the death of Caesar affairs fell into inextricable confusion. Mark Antony, his friend, though not his equal in virtue or talent, thinking the way open to the supreme authority in the state, endeavoured to obtain possession of it; but Cicero his mortal foe, combined with the senate to set up as his opponent Octavius, the nephew of Caesar, then twenty-two years old. Antony was obliged to flee across the Alps, but contrived soon after to detach Octavius from the party of the senate, and in conjunction with Lepidus, to form a second triumvirate, similar to that which had been established by Caesar, Pompey and Crassus. In a small island, formed by a division of the stream, which flows by the city of Bologna, the three chiefs met, and formed a league for the destruction of their enemies, and the consolidation of their power. Without asking the consent of the senate or of the people of Rome, they declared themselves directors of the republic for five years, and parcelled out the various provinces of the empire among each other. They also decreed the destruction of Brutus, Cassius, and the others who had embrued their hands in the blood of Caesar, and who were desirous of restoring the ancient forms of the republic. Finally they proceeded to mark out their private enemies for destruction, and doomed to death three hundred senators, two thousand knights, and a great number of the most distinguished citizens. Cicero, the celebrated orator and statesman, and the friend of Octavius, was basely given up by him to gratify the revenge of Antony; and this ornament of literature was assassinated by the ruffians sent to hunt after him. His head was cut off, and brought to Fulvia, the abandoned wife of Antony, who, after feasting her eyes with the sight, and pricking with her bodkin that tongue which had described her profligacy in such lively colours, ordered the head to be fixed up in the rostrum of Rome, which Cicero had rendered immortal by his eloquence. The days of Sylla were renewed; and Italy again streamed with the blood of its best citizens.

The triumvirs having thus put to death all their personal enemies whom they could seize, resolved upon the pursuit of Brutus, Cassius, and their associates. These were in possession of the East, from the resources of which they maintained a large army. The son of Pompey who had escaped destruction at Munda, and made himself master of Spain, Sicily, and Sardinia, also joined their party, which was, therefore, much more powerful by sea and land, as well as by the superior talents of its generals, than that of Octavius and his associates. They embarked with their troops for Greece, and a decisive battle was fought at Philippi in Macedonia, in which the triumvirs notwithstanding their inferiority were completely victorious. Brutus and Cassius, despairing of the destiny of Rome, put themselves to death; and many other Romans, of noble birth and great reputation, disdaining to survive their chiefs, became their own executioners. The battle of Philippi was fought, B. C. 42; it was the last struggle made for the renovation of the republic of Rome.

The eleven years which elapsed between the battle of Philippi, and that of Actium, were passed in disputes between the men who now monopolized all power at Rome, of whom the most subtle, Octavius, was in the end victorious over Antony. The details of this period, are of little interest. Sextus Pompeius, the associate of Brutus, alone held out against the triumvirs. His power was on the sea; by cutting off the supplies of corn as the pirates whom his father subdued, had formerly done, and by blockading the sea coast, he reduced Rome to a state of starvation; so that Octavius and his associates were happy to conclude a peace with him. Pompey however very soon discovered that this league with the more powerful triumvirs could only end in his destruction, and therefore declared war against Octavius. Antony sent his contingent of ships, as also did Lepidus. With these united forces, Pompey was attacked on all sides at once, and being defeated, fled to Asia, where he perished.

Lepidus was anxious to take possession of Sicily, left vacant by the death of Pompey; but Octavius gained over his troops and reduced him to insignificance. Thus one of the triumvirs being removed, all power was shared between Antony and Octavius; who, it was foreseen, would soon be at issue with each other. Antony had married the sister of his colleague, the virtuous Octavia, but on his return from Asia, he landed in Egypt, was smitten with the charms of Cleopatra, and abandoned himself to unlimited indulgence in her society. At the same time he formally separated himself from Octavia, which speedily brought on a war with his offended brother-in-law. Octavius, who, while in reality he was fighting only for his own interests, had the address to make the Romans believe that he was fighting the battles of the senate and the people, to prevent the subjugation of the republic to an Egyptian queen. His fleet and that of Antony came to battle at Actium in Greece. That of Antony was the most considerable, and he might have reasonably counted on victory, but in the midst of the engagement Cleopatra took to flight with her ships. Antony followed her example, and the rout became genera. Antony fled to Egypt, was pursued by Octavius, and hearing a false report of the death of Cleopatra, fell on his own sword. The Egyptian queen tried all her blandishing arts on Octavius, hoping to subdue him as she had his uncle, and his colleague, Caesar and Antony. But finding him indifferent to her charms, and knowing that he was only anxious to exhibit her alive in his triumph at Rome, she, rather than thus degrade the last of the Ptolemies, gave herself a voluntary death; and in the 295th year after the death of Alexander the Great, Egypt was reduced to the condition of a Roman province.

In this same year, B.C. 29, and in the year 724 from the building of Rome was Octavius invested

with all the power which heretofore was entrusted to the consuls and the tribunes, when he assumed the name of Augustus Caesar. From that year to the final extinction of the Roman empire, the entire government centered in one individua, who was called Emperor. Augustus reigned in Rome fortyfour years.

It was in the 29th year of the reign of Augustus Caesar, when the temple of Janus was closed a second time, and universal peace had dawned on the regions so long the theatre of the wars we have narrated; and when the greater part of the known world was enclosed within the circle of the Roman empire, that, in the fulness of time, Jesus Christ became incarnate, in the land of Judea, to atone for the sins of men by his own death, and to establish a kingdom of righteousness throughout the world. Here then we close this Brief Survey of Ancient History.

END OF PART I.
