GREEK COLONIES.

The colonization of the Greeks, which was commenced and carried forward during this epoch, next demands attention.

No nation of antiquity sent forth colonies with more ardour than the Greeks. The progress of their commercial enterprises gave birth to many of these foreign settlements, but a far greater number sprung from the internal discords with which Greece was agitated, the weaker party seeking on their defeat some distant abode; many also may be traced to the exuberance of population. So deeply rooted was the spirit of colonization in their minds, that the slighest cause was sufficient to give birth to a new settlement.

Of these colonies the most ancient were planted in Asia Minor, on the coast fronting Greece. The Trojan war brought the Greeks acquainted with this lovely region, to which on the first subsequent revolution at home, they resorted with the view of forming a settlement. The descent of the Heraclidæ had expatriated a large body of the Peloponnesians or Æolians, and the conquered chiefs lost no time in embarking with their subjects in search of a new abode. Arriving on the coast of Asia Minor, they extinguished the last remnant of the Trojan kingdom, and took possession both of the continent and the neighbouring islands. About eighty years after, the Ionians, being driven from Athens, on the extinction of the kingly office, were allured to this continent, and settling southward of their Æolian breathren, built twelve cities, which though independent of each other, held a federal council, and performed a national sacrifice. Among these cities Miletus became for that age the second commercial city in the world. She carried her trade far up the Black Sea, and peopled its shores with her colonies, computed by some at a hundred. By land the Milesians carried their commodities into the interior of Asia, and were in fact inferior only to the Tyrians in the extent of their commercial enterprises. Next in rank to Miletus was Phocæa, which extended its traffic to the west as the former had done to the north and the east. Its mariners visited the straights of Gibraltar, and founded colonies both in Italy and Gaul. The most renowned of these branch colonies was Marseilles at the southern extremity of France. It was founded by the Phocæans more than two thousand years ago, and is at the present time one of the most flourishing commercial towns in the world. The third stream of settlers to the coast of Asia Minor consisted of the Dorians, who took possession of the country lying south of India, including the islands of Cos and Rhodes. The whole line of coast was thus peopled by the lively and enterprising Greeks, who, emancipated from the discord which distracted Greece, carried the arts of civilized life to perfection, established an extensive commerce, and created a splendid navy. It was in this mild climate that the fine arts, and poetry and philosophy first dawned. Homer, the father of poesy was an inhabitant of this region; and it was here that Alcæus and Sappho expanded the blossoms of this art. From these colonies a taste for the fine arts was carried back to the mother country; and those who had been expelled from Greece were among the foremost to contribute to its improvement.

The shores of the Propontis and of the Black Sea, were covered with colonies from Miletus, which became the marts of a far extended traffic, embracing the whole of Southern Russia, and stretching eastward as far as Great Bukharia. These colonies were planted probably between the sixth and eighth centuries before Christ.

The coasts of Thrace and Macedon were peopled with colonies from Corinth and Argos. Between the years 750 and 650 before Christ, other colonies issued from Greece, and formed settlements in Southern Italy, which soon attained so flourishing a state, that this country came to be called Greece the Greater. The cities of Tarentum, Croton, and Sybaris, founded in those colonies, rose to amazing grandeur in a very short period; indeed this latter city in a war with Croton is said to have led 300,000 men into the field; but that which gave it especial renown, was the residence of Pythagoras the first of ancient philosophers, within its walls. About the same time also, colonies were planted by Corinth in the island of Sicily; and Syracuse, one of the most celebrated cities of antiquity, arose upon its shores. The ardour of colonization led the Greeks to the still more remote regions of Spain, and to Cyrene in Africa, and thus in the age immediately succeeding the Trojan war, the Greeks had acquired, with a popular form of government, a national love of independence, and a spirit of boundless enterprise; while their colonies, spread over all the neighbouring coasts, were laying the foundation for new empires. In this state of internal vigour, and external splendour, did the Greeks meet the combined forces of Western Asia. We now turn to the other nations of the world, and trace their history down to this period.
