EGYPT

At the period of the Trojan war Egypt was united under one monarch, of the family of the great Sesostris. It was under this line of kings, whose reigns extend from the year 1500 to the year 200 before Christ, that the plains of Egypt were covered with the pyramids and those other stupendous monuments, which more than twenty-five centuries have not been able to efface, and which still render that country so highly interesting to the traveller. During this period of six hundred years, the most flourishing of the Egyptian History, the institutions of the country reached their maturity, the distinction of casts was maintained with vigour; the priests shared the authority of the state; the king was shackled with religious rites, and foreigners were carefully excluded from all insight into the mysteries of religion, which for greater security were recorded in the hieroglyphic character, intelligible to the priests alone. In all these respects we are led to the conclusion that a very extraordinary resemblance existed between the state and condition of Egypt, and that of India when under its Hindoo kings.

About the year B. C. 900 Sabaco, a foreigner from Ethiopia, subjugated the country. After his departure, Sethos, an Egyptian priest or brahmin, seated himself on the throne. The unity of the kingdom was shortly after broken, and twelve chiefs reigned in as many divisions of the kingdom. Quarrels, as might have been expected, broke out among them, and Psammeticus, one of their number was expelled. This exiled prince, about the year B. C. 650 took into his pay a body of Ionian and Carian or Greek mercenaries, and with their aid conquered the whole kingdom. He allotted them lands in Egypt, and retained them as his body guard. This was the first instance of the admission of foreigners into Egypt, and the influence of this innovation was soon felt upon the national institutions. The cast of Egyptian warriors, (the kshetriyus) were disgusted, and many of them retired to Ethiopia; the supremacy of the priesthood was shaken; the king aspired to the formation of a navy, and engaged in wars with the rising monarchies in Asia. Psammeticus was succeeded by Necho his son, who completed the navy, and carried his victorious arms as far as the Euphrates; but losing the battle of Circesium, was obliged to retire. He endeavoured to unite the Mediterranean with the Red Sea by means of a canal, but failed. Under his auspices the continent of Africa is said to have been circumnavigated by his newly formed navy, the boldest enterprise in which any monarch or people had to that period engaged. His grandson Apries formed plans of conquest in Asia, besieged the maritime city of Sidon, and even defeated the Tyrians, then the first naval power in the world. He afterwards undertook an expedition against the Grecian colony of Cyrene in Africa, but was defeated; and his people, wearied with the ambitious projects which his family had pursued for more than a hundred years, with the aid of Greek mercenaries, deprived him of his throne and life. With him fell the royal house of Psammeticus.

Amasis, a man of low origin, but of great ability, who had secretly fomented the late revolution, now took possession of the sovereign power. Under the influence of the enlightened Greeks, who had obtained so firm a footing in the country, he carried the prosperity of Egypt to the highest pitch; but this was only ‘the lightning before death.’ He had engaged in disputes with Cyrus, the conqueror of the East; and the Persians, flushed with success, determined to chastise the Egyptian monarch. Cyrus, and Amasis, however, both died about the same time, and Cambyses, the son of Cyrus, led the hosts of Persia against Psammenitus, the son of Amasis. In one battle fought at Pelusium, the Persians were victorious, and the conquered kingdom of Egypt was absorbed in the Persian empire, B. C. 525. Thus fell the most ancient monarchy then in the world. During the next epoch it continued to be a province of Persia.
